Business For the Glory of God: The Bible's Teaching on the Moral Goodness of Business
By Wayne Grudem
2021/96 pages
Business for the Glory of God is a small handbook of under 100 pages that sets out to prove
that business is fundamentally good and is glorifying to God. The author, Wayne Grudem,
covers 11 aspects of business activity that include Ownership, Productivity, Employment,
Commercial Transactions, Profit, Money, Inequality of possessions, Competition, Borrowing
and Lending, Attitudes of the heart and Effects on world poverty. As he goes through these
aspects of business, he offers a good number of Biblical examples of business transactions,
the laws given in the Old Testament and the teachings of Christ to steer the reader away
from the negative connotations sometimes associated with these aspects of business.
If you find it hard to see business in any way coming from God or glorifying His Name, this
is a great short book, as it is clear and easy to read. Grudem makes easy work of using the
Bible to cover all aspects of business. He draws examples for his arguments using Western,
industrialised ideas about business and hasn’t seemed to consider other cultures or life
situations, claiming that subsistence living cannot be glorifying to God. He also stays away
from giving examples of where a business can improve its practices or where a business.
often fall short of the perfection God requires.
This is a good book to learn how business is fundamentally good and glorying to God, but is
probably best used as a handbook, rather than a comprehensive guide for how to shape
your business according to the gospel.
