Sumba is an Indonesian island, located south-east of Bali, just 700 miles from Darwin. It has an area of 11,153km2 and a population of around 620,000. It has a tropical climate and a majority of the population depend on adequate rain for for subsistence farming. Twenty five percent of the population of Sumba practice the traditional animistic Marapu religion, and the majority of the remainder are Christian. This fascinating Island is know for it’s impressive megalithic tombs, intricate hand-woven textiles and surfing beaches.
